As IMA President (now IMA Chair) in 1988-89, Ernie considered himself a “grassroots” leader. He joined the Richmond Chapter in 1965 and worked his way up through various offices until he became chapter president in 1977-78. Then he served as chair of several IMA committees and as a national vice president. A team player, throughout his IMA life Ernie always put members first, encouraging them to participate in as many association activities as possible and enhancing the feeling of camaraderie. “The member is the most important person in the organization,” he emphasized.
After an early career in management accounting, Ernie changed to banking for 21 years. As senior vice president of Signet Banking Corporation in Richmond, Va., he was the first banker to head the association. But he liked to concentrate more on people than on numbers, so he began teaching at the University of Richmond and VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) when he retired.
Ernie loved life. He served in the U.S. Navy, he held a degree in accounting and an MBA in finance/marketing from the University of Richmond, and he was the president and a drummer for the Thomas Jefferson Cadet Corps Alumni Band. He loved his family, his friends, IMA, the beach, golf, and the Washington Redskins. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Maxine; two daughters, Ellen (Billy) Cavanaugh and Karen (Mark) Rawlyk; five grandchildren, Will, Chad, and Daniel Cavanaugh and Michelle and Brandon Rawlyk; and four siblings, Billy Huband, Linda Huband, Donnie Huband, and Joyce Luck. He will be missed by all of us who knew him.
